HospiceCare of Southeast Florida presented its first Camp Coral, a complimentary
weekend bereavement camp for children age 6 – 13 years on Pigeon Key Island, MM 47
Marathon, Florida, November 7 – 9, 2008. HospiceCare established Camp Coral in Broward County in 1991 for children who have suffered the loss of a loved one as a safe environment for children to come to terms with their grief. The camp is open to any child who lives in Broward, Miami, and Monroe Counties. “We were very excited to present Camp Coral in Monroe County as a chance for Keys kids to take advantage of a bereavement camp locally. Camp Coral is entirely staffed by trained volunteers from HospiceCare which includes employees and Nova Southeastern Department of Family Therapy post graduate students. Onsite was Dr. Covington and various nurses in case of emergency,” said Rita Charron, Camp Coral Director. The children expressed their grief using the mediums of art, music, and drama. They enjoyed fishing, swimming, and much more! The day’s activities cumulated with a flower release ceremony, followed by s'mores by the camp fire. Camp Coral is a HospiceCare community outreach program that receives support from the local entities such as Publix who donated the flowers and T-Toons who made the Tshirts. Camp Coral is available to any child who has suffered a loss whether or not it is hospice related.
Camp Coral 2009, has been scheduled for October 9 – 11 at Pigeon Key Island,
Marathon. For more information and/or an |
