Hospice History
The term Hospice can be tracked back to the early Medieval “Civilization” when it was used to describe a place of shelter and rest for the weary or sick travelers on long journeys. The term was first applied to “specialized care” for patients at the end-of-life in 1967; at Saint Christopher's Hospice in London {the first modern hospice} by Dr. Cecily Sanders. Hospice refers to a special palliative type of care or “aggressive comfort care” for people at the end-of-life.
The first hospice program in the United States began serving patients in 1974. Today over 3,000 hospice programs in all fifty states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico offer comprehensive hospice care.
Hospice provides comfort, support and state of the art palliative care. Hospice seeks to manage all symptoms, to provide persons quality and dignity to their lives at home or in a home-like setting. Through this palliative care, Hospice recognizes dying as part of the normal process of living and focuses on maintaining Quality of Life. Although, we cannot prolong life, we at Hospice want to add to the life remaining.
